Northwestern University Marching Band performs at the Northwestern Wildcats game against the Michigan State University Spartans at Dyche Stadium. Conducted by Dale J. Lonis, the pregame performances include "America the Beautiful," "Gonna Fly Now," Go U Northwestern," and the National Anthem. The halftime performances include "Conquistador," "El Canto Trieste," and "Grooving Hard." A tribute to the senior members of the band is made and "March of the Steelmen" is performed on the last home game of the regular season. Finally, John P. Paynter conducts the NU marching band for "Alma Mater." Music professor and bandleader John Phillip Paynter, named for John Phillip Sousa, began his musical studies at Northwestern, graduating with a Bachelor of Music degree in 1950 and a Master's in Theory and Composition in 1951. Upon graduation, Paynter joined NU's faculty as the Director of the Marching Band. During his career at Northwestern, Paynter taught classes in band music, conducting, and arranging. The John P. Paynter Collection consists of six series titled Biographical Materials, Office, Northwestern University "Wildcat" Marching Band (NUMB), Publications, Music, and Digital and Audio Visual Material.
