Pregame and half-time performances by the Northwestern University Marching Band. First, the Northwestern University Marching Band performs at the Northwestern Wildcats home game against the Rutgers Scarlet Knights at Dyche Stadium. Conducted by Stephen G. Peterson, the pregame performances include "God Bless America," "Go U Northwestern," and the National Anthem. The Northwestern University Marching band begins the halftime show with "Chimes Festival." High school marching bands from the Illinois area join the Northwestern University Marching Band on High School Band Day. Don Owens conducts the bands for John Philip Sousa's "Manhattan Beach March," and Peterson conducts Tchaikovsky's "1812 Overture." John P. Paynter conducts the NU marching band and high school bands for "Alma Mater." Then the Northwestern Marching Band performs the pregame show for a Chicago Cubs game at Wrigley Field in Chicago, Illinois. The band performs "Go U Northwestern," "You are the Sunshine of My Life," "La Fiesta," and "Chimes Festival." Music professor and bandleader John Phillip Paynter, named for John Phillip Sousa, began his musical studies at Northwestern, graduating with a Bachelor of Music degree in 1950 and a Master's in Theory and Composition in 1951. Upon graduation, Paynter joined NU's faculty as the Director of the Marching Band. During his career at Northwestern, Paynter taught classes in band music, conducting, and arranging. The John P. Paynter Collection consists of six series titled Biographical Materials, Office, Northwestern University "Wildcat" Marching Band (NUMB), Publications, Music, and Digital and Audio Visual Material.
